145.470 Ratpack Webpage June 1, 2008

Hello everyone hope that everyone has had a Great Week!!
I would like to congratulate All those who have become ham
radio operator's, I was told we have some Boy Scouts
also passed their test and we have some upgrades..
Way To Go !!! And Welcome To Ham Radio For All
That Have Just Got Your License ........
On our last news letter I expressed my feeling and opinions
about Religion and Gov Politics on air, which seemed to upset a few
and others agreed ... Well it was my opinion which I feel that
I was entitled to state as well as others have the right to state
openly their feelings ... For the record I personally do not mind what
is discussed, everyone should be able to express their opinion,
and I am not retracting what I said, I feel very firmly about what
I said, and believe in it, as you may believe the opposite of me,ok,
but what bothers me is when a discussion turns out to be disruptive
and argumentative on the repeater, where many really don't
want to hear this type of disruptive behavior... But the real point got
overlooked.. The language,to me its not acceptable, and those using
profane language, even after being asked not to, I feel, should not have a
have a ham license, or should be at least, be placed on a probationary
removal from that repeater.. again this is my feelings not that of any repeater
owner or anyone else..I also feel that if anyone would like to discuss this matter
with me please feel free to call me, I don't feel that it needs to be discussed on
the air over and over and over, I do respect everyones feelings and opinions,
and if we all was alike it would be a very boring world... I have been a ham
for over 25 years and have enjoyed the hobby !! Its really great, and I have
meet may great and wonderful people and hope to meet many more !!
With that I had several
Operators send me a few things I would like to share with everyone..
Hope that you enjoy this weeks news letter...
This one is really great, thank you Russell, From our Chaplin,
Hope that you all get a laugh from this one!!The Ark 2008
NOAH
In the year 2008, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in the United States, and said: Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me.Build another Ark and save 2 of every living thing along with a few good humans. He gave Noah the blueprints, saying: You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights.Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard - but no Ark.Noah! He roared, I'm about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?Forgive me, Lord, begged Noah, 'but things have changed.
I needed a building permit.
I've been arguing with the inspector about the need for a sprinkler system.
My neighbors claim that I've violated the neighborhood zoning laws by building the Ark in my yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the Development Appeal Board for a decision.
Then the Department of Transportation demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it.
Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the spotted owl.I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!
When I started gathering the animals, an animal rights group sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space.

Then the EPA ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood.

I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I'm supposed to hire for my building crew.
Immigration and Naturalization are checking the green-card status of most of the people who want to work.
The trades unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only Union workers with Ark-building experience.
To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species.
So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark.
Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky.Noah looked up in wonder and asked,'You mean you're not going to destroy the world?'

"No," said the Lord."The government beat me to it."

This one was sent From Boyd, thank you for this article, It was very upseting
that this turned out this way, to me disrepectful to our service men and women
also.. hope that it is resolved and the young man is not upset any further..

Outrage Of The Week!

Read this!

This week's outrage comes to us from Winchendon, Massachusetts where, in yet another case of "zero-tolerance" enforcement defying common sense, fourth-grader Bradley Geslak was suspended from Toy Town Elementary School for bringing a Memorial Day souvenir to school.

According to a May 29, Telegram.com article, a uniformed veteran gave the 10-year-old two empty rifle shell casings from blanks used during the town's Memorial Day celebration Monday morning. Bradley gave one of the empty casings to his grandfather and kept the other as a souvenir. The trouble began when he took his souvenir to school the next day.

"He was just playing with it at lunch," explained Crystal Geslak, Bradley's mother. "He wasn't showing it to anyone; he had it in his hand and was playing with it."

A teacher saw him with the harmless piece of brass and confiscated it. Ms. Geslak was then called at work and told to come and pick up her son, who had been suspended for five days!

Ms. Geslak arrived at the school to find her son in tears. "I was totally shocked. I couldn't believe this was happening," she said. "It was just an empty shell, not even from a real bullet. A sharpened pencil would be more dangerous than this piece of metal."

"He was so proud to have been given them. His dad's a veteran, his uncle's a veteran, both his grandfathers are veterans. Memorial Day is a big thing to us. It's a very important holiday and we have a big celebration every year," Ms. Geslak said.

Ms. Geslak, who will be forced to miss work in order to stay home with her son, says she is worried about what having a "weapon-related suspension" on his school record will mean to his future.

To add insult to injury, the family says a school official told them that the shell would not be returned, and that the next step might involve assigning a probation officer to Bradley! Yes, you read that right, a probation officer.

A young boy punished over a harmless souvenir. By any standard, that's outrageous.

If you'd like to express your concern over this incident, please visit http://www.winchendon.mec.edu/. To leave a voice message for Brooke Clenchy, Superintendent of Schools, please call 978-297-0031.

FROM BOYD

My opinion, this is just ridiculus! I know our schools needs to be safe and to take measures to be more careful but good gosh! Come on, this is an outrage.

Gun history

Here is a mail that is most important to me. It is not a joke nor is it of
religious content. I own no weapons of mass destruction, I own no military
weapons that fire automatic. I have sporting weapons in assorted calibers.
Some antique and some modern. I will vote against any politician that wants
to take this freedom away from me. No matter what their political parties
are Democrat or Republican it makes no difference to me. If they want Gun
Control and sponsor Anti-Hunter groups, they loose my vote. From an Old
Hunter and Nature Lover who also Loves Animals.

A Little Gun History Lesson In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun
control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend
themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. >From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million
Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
---------------------------
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13
million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up
and exterminated
------------------------------
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million
political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and
exterminated.
----------------------------
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan
Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000
Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
------------------------------
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million
'educated' people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and
exterminated.
-----------------------------
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because
of gun control: 56 million.
------------------------------
It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new
law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own
government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million
dollars. The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent Australia-wide, assaults are up
8.6 percent Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44
percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300
percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the
criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!
It will never happen here? I bet the Aussies said that too!
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed
robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12
months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the
ELDERLY.Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety
has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in
successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience
and the other historical facts above prove it.
You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians
disseminating this information.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes,
gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind him of
this history lesson. With Guns............We Are 'Citizens'.
Without Them........We Are 'Subjects'.
During W.W.II the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew
most Americans were ARMED!
Note: Admiral Yamamoto who crafted the attack on Pearl Harbor had attended
Harvard U 1919-1921 & was Naval AttachA(C) to the U. S. 1925-28. Most of our
Navy was destroyed apteral Harbor & our Army had been deprived of funding &
was ill prepared to defend the country.
It was reported that when asked why Japan did not follow up the Pearl Harbor
attack with an invasion of the U. S. Mainland, his reply was that he had
lived in the U.. S. & knew that almost all households had guns.
If you value your freedom, Please spread this anti-gun control message to
all your friends!

From WV4R Thanks for your review...

My "Replacement Radio".

After years of faithful service, my ole FT-100D bit the dust a while back after a beeg thunderstorm hit TheFarm. I opened her up and saw a clean hole thru the main board about the size of a .32caliber round… NOT worth fixing!

So…

I replaced it with another Yaesu… FT-857D and never looked back.

It looks gud and works great as an All-In-One radio. I even rigged a low current closed-frame relay to key my new Tokyo Hi-Power HL-1.2Kfx amp… After finding the correct plug for the rear jack… getting even better reports. Emboldened with gud reports, I got a W2IHY interface cable and hooked it up to the W2IHY 8-band EQ & EQ-Plus using the Heil Sound PR-40 microphone getting even better reports!

Recently I purchased the "FTB857" software from G4HFQ in England and the "TTLUSB2" interface to make programming even easier. The gud news with G4HFQ software you can CLONE all your Yaesu radios to the same "memory channels" if you like… thus you can have all the VHF/UHF channels you have in your Hi-Band radios in your FT-857D! Gud FM reports received on VHF/UHF using verticals, however, no antenna for 6m yet.

Oh… yes… I even dabbled in slow scan TV & RTTY & keyboard CW with the new SignaLink USB interface. Is there no end to the fun of hammy radio?

Oops… I digress… You can even open up your transmitter a bit with MENU configurations so you do not get the dreaded "you have no lows" report… and your receiver a bit also… bearing in mind the "2.4" filter in the radio is the limiting factor.

As with any small footprint radio there are multi-function buttons requiring initial Menu set-up made easy with the good manual from Yaesu, which is available online from Yaesu in full-page, easy to read format for shack use IF you have trouble with those pesky half-page ones.

The microphone Input is that strange "telephone jack" type. If you want to use some of your old microphones, you can purchase interface cables with the correct jacks online & from W2IHY and Heil Sound among others.

So… for cosmetic design, functionality, flexibility in configurations, solid feel & bang for the bucks, it rightfully earns the WV4R "Five-Star" rating.
